This portrait demonstrates Lawrence's highly sympathetic portrayal of older sitters, in which penetrating characterisation does not compromise due regard for their status. Though perhaps less dynamic than his later portraiture which in the following decade was to capture the essence of the Regency, portraits such as this - immediately suggesting his revolutionary portrayal of Queen Charlotte in 1789 - easily explain his meteoric progress in outstripping all rivals at the close of the eighteenth century.
