Downman’s portrait of Humphry Repton is rare on two counts – both as a miniature by Downman and as an image of this private man. There are few surviving portraits of Repton, the landscape gardener and natural successor to Capability Brown. The present portrait miniature appears to have been painted when Repton was in his forties, which would fit neatly with Downman’s foray into miniature painting.
