Henry Stuart was the younger son of the ‘Old Pretender’, James III, and the brother of Bonnie Prince Charlie. In 1747 Henry was made a Cardinal, a public affirmation of the Stuart’s Catholicism that was seen as damaging to the Jacobite cause. But there was no longer any realistic chance of a Stuart restoration in England, and Henry’s new career brought much needed security to his family. To the Jacobites he is known as King Henry IX of England.
