Burgess began his career in his native Ireland and was elected to be a member of the Irish Society of Artists. In 1813 he shifted his attention towards London and in 1813, at the age of thirty, he entered the R.A. schools. His portrait miniatures are extremely rare but beautifully painted and reminiscent of the best miniaturists of the early 19th century, including Andrew Robertson M.A..
