Portrait miniature of a Gentleman, wearing brown coat, waistcoat and stock, his hair powdered and worn en queue
George Engleheart (1750/3-1829)
Watercolour on ivory
Oval, 1 Ĺ in. (38mm.) high
This finely drawn portrait of a gentleman dates from the first half of Engleheartís long and prolific career. Such were his skills that even in such a small arena he is able to describe the edging of his sitterís silk embroidered waistcoat. The portrait is set into a bracelet clasp frame and may well have been worn originally on the wrist of the sitterís wife.
