Charles Richard Bone descended from a distinguished line of portrait miniaturists, being the son of Henry Pierce Bone and the grandson of the renowned enamellist Henry Bone.

Bone specialised, like his predecessors, in portrait miniatures, and at the age of nineteen entered the Royal Academy Schools but not before receiving numerous awards, including two silver medals from the Society of Artists in 1825 and 1827.
