Meuret set up his practice in Paris, having moved from his native Nantes and began exhibiting at the Salon from 1822. He received a first class medal in 1843 and in 1864 he was appointed Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur. His patronage was wide and included the French royal family and the court. Initially his work mirrored the lighter painting style of Isabey but he soon changed to a distinctive, highly coloured palette. He was particularly successful in his portraits of children, often painting entire families to be set into bracelets. His works can be found in most major public collections in Europe, including the Louvre, Paris and the Albertina, Vienna.
