This portrait by Marshall Claxton captures the Palmerston in a similar aspect to that in the famous image of c.1855 by Francis Cruikshank (NPG 3953). It was no doubt painted during the same period, two years after Palmerston had become Prime Minister in 1855. This dating is not least required by the artist's itinerary, since in 1857 the artist returned from extensive travel in Australia, India, Egypt and the Holy Land. As a part of this great journey he had been commissioned by the Queen to paint a view of Sydney Harbour, now in the Royal Collection, as well as a portrait of the ''Queen of the Aborigines.''
