The image of Thomas Jefferson, like that of George Washington, is largely fixed in our consciousness by the painting of Gilbert Stuart and the sculpture of Jean-Anthoine Houdon. In the bust by Houdon we see the most perfect expression of the determination and the analytical intelligence that is suggested by the biography of this remarkable man -Governor of Virginia, Founder of the University of Virginia, Signatory of the Declaration of Independence and -least, in his opinion, of all his achievements- third President of the United States.
