A leading figure in seventeenth century Court and political life, and author of the highly influential ''History of the Rebellion'', Hyde's most romantic period was as private secretary to Charles II while he was in exile in France. Afterwards, as Charles's leading minister from 1660-1667, with the help of the Cavalier Parliament, he firmly established the Anglican Church in England, to which he was devoted. As father of Anne Hyde, wife of James II, he was also grandfather of Queen Anne.
