Portrait of a child in an Arcadian Landscape 1700s

Charles Dagar

Portrait of a child in an Arcadian Landscape, Charles Dagar
Oil on canvas
18th Century
30 x 25 inches 76.2 x 63.5 cm
The flowing draperies and hairstyle of this boy show Dagar's typical indebtedness to the work of Michael Dahl, though the more angular, conventional pose is distinctly Dagar's. This is, however, one of his most impressive, freely worked pieces, and the rich, red sunset landscape of the background is a moving homage to Titian and the panters of Renaissance Venice.
