Portrait of a Young Child 1800s

Anglo Oriental

Portrait of a Young Child, Anglo Oriental
Oil on copper
19th Century
This small painting of a young girl sitting up on a blue chair in front of a basket of fruit must be a representation of a planter's or colonist's child. It dates from the nineteenth century, though the place of execution and the nationality of the artist remains a matter of conjecture, but the mountainous landscape behind sets the scene perhaps in South Asia. The landscape is an especially beautiful and satisfying piece of painting.
