This portrait echoes Van Dyck's celebrated proficiency in capturing the character of children. It is easy to forget how few of his predecessors had managed to show children as other than mute and inexpressive duplicates in miniature of their parents. Van Dyck unlocks their world and shows that it has dimensions of expressiveness and feeling to equal and perhaps surpass their elders.

This portrait is a replica of the unidentified young girl in Van Dyck's portrait of Margaret, Countess of Carlisle [Chatsworth].
