This rich portrait of the great patron and collector the Earl of Arundel - whose original is in the collection of the Duke of Norfolk, Arundel's descendant - is a deservedly famous composition. The Earl was not a soldier - he spent the Civil War in Italian exile - but he may have felt that armour best reflected the martial history of the Howards. The baton he holds aludes to his office of Earl Marshal of England, now hereditary in the Howard family. His protective gesture about the shoulders of his grandson
