This portrait of the Queen was one of the most popular patterns during the middle part of her reign and much copies. Winterhalter's popularity with the Royal family was attributed to his being German like the Prince Consort who patronised him. This much is true and accounted for something of his initial appeal, but it is also true that he invented a new, more modern pattern for Royal portraiture which in its combination of dignity and domesticity ideally suited the taste of the Royal couple.
