Portrait of Sir Issac Newton 1642 - 1727 1830c.

Charles Robert Leslie

Portrait of Sir Issac Newton 1642 - 1727, Charles Robert Leslie
Oil on canvas
19th Century
This later portrait of the great mathematician owes its inspiration to portraits painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller and John Vanderbank. The sculptural and architectural elements, the pyramid and the plaque relief depicting personifications of - perhaps - mathematics and geometry - allude to his interests and achievements. The globe in particular may refer to the sitter's famous observations on gravity.
