Portrait of Lord Kitchener (1850-1916), c.1900, Elliot Sawyer
Oil on canvas
20th Century
Famous for the First World War recruiting poster which featured his face, depicted not unlike the present portrait, Kitchener was such a totem to the British pubic in that conflict that news of his death at sea in 1916 was suppressed for fear of it causing general despondence. His first great success as a commander was in defeating the armies of the Khalifa in the Sudan thirty years previously, a battle in which Winston Churchill had fought.
