Greuze was acknowledged in the eighteenth century as the master portrayer of children. This example is without the saccharine, allegorical quality that often disappoints modern audiences viewing his work, whose effect is blunted by over-familiarity. It is direct and unpretentious and is perhaps one of his more impressive and successful works.
