This large bust of the early radical thinker and Member of Parliament Richard Cobden was probably produced as a memorial piece in the period immediately following his death. An early champion of opposition to the Corn Laws, he espoused an internationalist laissez-faire school of economics which was much decried by the protectionist mentality of the nineteenth century, but is perhaps in sympathy with more modern conceptions of Europe as a nationless single-trading entity.
