This portrait of the husband to Mary Queen of Scots, King Consort of Scotland, shows him prominently wearing the insignia of the Order of the Garter, and may have been painted therefore for an English patron. Darnley's murder in 1567 in which the Queen was implicated was the last hammer blow to the safety of her rule and precipitated the events which led her to be a two decades' prisoner in England and finally to suffer execution there.
