Portrait of a gentleman with a cello 1720s, English School
Oil on canvas
18th Century
This painting is close in style to the small scale figure groups of Charles Philips, and with its suggestion of a grand garden and pavilion visible through the window of the room in which the sitter is playing recalls Philips's work for Frederick Prince and Wales and his cultured circle. It also provides a wealth of details about early Georgian interiors, furniture and fittings.
