John Barry was an extremely accomplished and proflific artist but very little is known about his life. He appears to have been based in London, painting miniatures of some high profile people such as the Rev. John Wesley. He was certainly exhibiting at the Royal Academy between 1784-1827.

Barry's work is extremely distcintive, blending tiny linear brushstrokes to form a lively mass of hair and model animated features. This portrait dates to circa 1795 and is typical of his work from this period.
