George Place was born in Dublin, where he began his formal training at the Dublin Society Schools in 1775. After starting his independent practice as a miniature painter in Dublin he moved to London, where he exhibited at the R.A. 1791-97. This portrait was probably painted just prior to his departure to India, where he worked from 1798 in Lucknow. He received many important commissions in India from the Nawab but few of his paintings and drawings survived the Indian Mutiny. He died in Lucknow in 1805.
