This portrait of Catherine Shorter, first wife of the Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole, is a superb example of the elegant style which made Charles Jervas the foremost successor to Sir Godfrey Kneller after the latter's death in 1723. The sitter is captured in a moment of relaxation in country house garden, perhaps alluding to her husband's magnificent house at Houghton in Norfolk. Like the shepherdesses of the fete champetre she is shown in the act of picking flowers, which fill a small basket on her arm.
