At the end of the Civil War, the sitter's grandfather, Sir John Shorter (1624-88), with the assistance of the wealthy banker, Josiah Child, built up a considerable fortune in the timber trade. The Shorter family had been displaced during the conflict, moving from Staines to London. A period of rapid prosperity followed and in 1687 Sir John was appointed Lord Mayor of London. On his death the next year his estate included property in Westminster, Southwark and the City, as well as his county seat at Bybrook in Kent.
