Black and white chalk
19th Century
This beautiful chalk drawing shows a young girl holding her pet dog in a wood or the bosky glade of a naturalistic garden. Perhaps it is not unreasonable to see the influence of Rousseauian principles, which, with their notion of the child as a free spirit whose innate wildness should be cultivated and indulged rather than suppressed, had begun to influence child-rearing among the upper clases since the end of the eighteenth century
