No record of the Earl's pamphlet seems to have survived, sadly. Eighteenth century divorce was an expensive business, requiring a special Act of Parliament, and many couples, particularly among the upper classes such as the Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole and his wife Catherine Shorter, that would now be divorced led separate lives but remained officially married to avoid either the expense or the public scrutiny of divorce.
