The great cavalry commander the Marquis of Granby enjoyed a considerable military reputation in his time - as a bold commander and a good officer in the care he took of his men. Two traces of this survive to the present day. To go at things ''bald-headed'' refers to his wig flying off as he led a cavalry charge, whilst the numerous pubs named after him in England testify to the help he gave old soldiers in setting up as publicans on retirement.
